Janesville Legion returns with win

BELOIT — The Janesville American baseball team returned from a week off Thursday night to post a 5-2 victory over host Beloit.

Janesville used a five-run rally in the second inning and had four pitchers combine to limit Beloit to five hits to improve to 15-7.

The Legion scored four unearned runs in the second thanks to pair of Beloit errors. Tyler Campbell smacked an RBI double to highlight the inning.

Beloit reached Andy Kersten for two runs on three hits in the third inning, but Andy Iverson and Sam McCann combined to hold Beloit to one hit the rest of the way. Iverson allowed one hit through three innings, and McCann pitched a hitless seventh for the save.

Starter Colin Frey allowed one hit in two innings. Kersten allowed two runs on three hits in one inning.

“We tried to get our pitchers an inning after being off a week,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “That was the plan.’’

Janesville’s was scheduled to Barrington, Ill., today, but the game was rescheduled to 10 a.m. Saturday in Mundelein, Ill. Janesville plays Lake Forest, Ill. following Barrington.
