UW holds off Michigan

— The University of Wisconsin weathered visiting Michigan’s second-half rally Monday to post a 66-60 victory in Big Ten women’s basketball.

Wisconsin improves to 4-5 in the Big Ten and 8-13 overall. Michigan falls to 5-4 and 16-6.

The Wolverines used a 16-0 run to tie the game at 47, but the Badgers went 6-of-7 from the free throw line to hold on for their third consecutive conference victory.

The Badgers’ Morgan Paige responded with a layup at 5 minutes, 40 seconds to give UW back its lead. Michigan tied the game at 49 and again at 51 with just under four minutes to play.

Michigan’s Rachel Sheffer brought the score to 53-52 with 3:01 to go. That was as close as the Wolverines would come as the Badgers responded with a 5-0 run. Cassie Rochel’s layup put UW ahead 58-52 with 1:37 to go.

Wisconsin made four trips to the line in the final 51 seconds, shooting 6-of-7 to seal the victory.

Taylor Wurtz scored a game-high 21 points. Teammate Jade Davis added 13 points.

Rachel Sheffer scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Michigan.
