Parker boys lose lead
Despite an 11-point lead in the second quarter, the Vikings struggled down the stretch as Madison East rallied for a 63-54 Big Eight Conference win.
Parker (5-11, 3-9) took a 54-53 lead with 2:03 left to play on Tanner Smith’s basket, but East (6-11, 5-9) scored the last 10 points of the game.
“It’s frustrating because we certainly had our chances,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “We missed too many point-blank shots, and they hurt us with some three’s late.
“Overall, I thought we did a pretty good job, especially on the defensive end.”
East took the lead for good at 56-54 with 1:53 left on Miles Kietzer’s third three-point basket of the quarter. Jermel McLin pushed the lead to four with a layup, and Rudy Bentley then made four straight free throws to seal the victory.
The Purgolders finished with eight three-pointer’s, including four in the fourth quarter. Bentley, who had 35 against Parker earlier this season, finished with a game-high 20 on Saturday. He had 15 in the second half.
“Bentley is a tough match-up for us because of his ability to penetrate and get to the basket,” Masterson said. “I thought we did a decent job of denying him that, but then they had some other guys step up and hurt us.
“We just have to finish better and make the point-blank shot.”
Masterson took an early timeout to make it clear that one pass and a shot was not going to cut it on the offensive end. The Vikings responded with a 10-3 run to take a four-point lead after one. Parker continued its strong play early in the second as the lead grew to 24-13 on Decker Thompson’s three-point basket with 3:01 left in the half. East eventually cut the margin to five at half and drew even at 40-40 after three quarters.
Smith led Parker with 14 points, including 12 in the second half. Andrew Somerville finished with 13 for the Vikings, and Thompson added 11.
