— Police have arrested a Beloit man in connection with a high-speed pursuit in Milton early Jan. 4, according to a news release from the Milton Police Department.

Jeremy W. Smith, 31, of 2607 Pioneer Drive, No. 11, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of knowingly fleeing an officer, receiving stolen property and recklessly endangering safety, according to the news release.

Smith also had an outstanding warrant through the Department of Corrections, according to the news release.

Police arrested Smith at home after investigators received a tip on his whereabouts. Smith ran from officers but was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

Investigators from the Milton Police Department and the Rock County Sheriff's Office made the arrest.

Milton police reported attempting to pull over a green pickup truck on Highway 26 early Jan. 4 for a traffic violation.

The truck, which had a male driver and a male passenger, fled police and led officers on a high-speed chase along Highway 26 into Janesville, according to Milton police reports. Authorities later found the truck in Illinois but not the two men.

It was unclear Thursday whether police believe Smith was the driver or a passenger in the truck. Police on Thursday were also unsure whether Smith is connected to a burglary reported early Jan 4. at Gopher's Bar and Grill, 229 N. Janesville St., Milton.

Area police and Rock County authorities have been investigating a rash of at least a dozen bar and tavern burglaries throughout Rock County in the past month.

In many of the incidents, burglars have broken into taverns after closing hours and taken cash from electronic poker machines, police say.
