Whitewater Warhawks hike streak to six, women win

UW-Whitewater’s men’s basketball team ran its winning streak to six Wednesday night.

The ninth-ranked Warhawks got 23 points and 10 rebounds from Chris Davis in rallying for a 75-70 WIAC win over UW-Platteville.

Whitewater (14-1, 5-1) trailed by two at half, but took the lead for good at 38-36 on Quardell Young’s basket with 18:40 left to play. With the win, the Warhawks stayed tied with UW-Stevens Point and UW-River Falls for first place in the WIAC

Davis, a Madison East graduate and the WIAC’s leading scorer, was one of five Warhawks in double figures. Young added 14 points, while Elkhorn High graduate Eric Bryson, Luke Knoble and Alex Edmunds added 10 points each.

Monroe High graduate Brett Stangel led Platteville (9-7, 3-4) with 19 points.

Warhawk women win

-- Whitewater 66, Platteville 55—Cortney Kumerow had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Warhawks to the WIAC win.

Whitewater (10-4, 2-3) led by four at half but pushed the lead to double digits early in the second half.

Mary Merg added 13 points for the Warhawks, who missed 13 of 15 three-point shots.

Ashley Henry had 12 points to lead Platteville (6-9, 2-4), while South Wayne graduate Kim Wellnitz added 10.
