Janesville Craig pulls away late
Janesville Craig girls basketball coach Kerry Storbakken was worried that his team may come out flat Monday night after last Friday’s emotional victory over rival Parker.
But the Cougars turned in another strong defensive effort and pulled away late for a
48-40 nonconference victory over Oconomowoc.
“You never know after that huge win on Friday,” said Storbakken. “You hope your kids don’t come in and play flat. But we came in with some energy, and beat a nice team.”
Craig (14-7) outscored Oconomowoc, 14-7, in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
“It was nip and tuck for three quarters,” Storbakken said. “That fourth quartrer we hit our free throws. Michela Holzhuter hit a couple huge shots, and she had six points in that quarter.”
The Cougars made 15 of 17 free-throw attempts in the game, including 6 of 7 in the fourth.
Brooke Negus scored 13 points to lead Craig, and Holzhuter finished with 11.
“Once we started getting the ball inside, we got them in foul trouble and we made our free throws,” Storbakken said. “I’m really proud of this team. We just really share the ball and play team basketball.”
Mandy Prom scored 14 points, and Abby Thelen had 11 for Oconomowoc (13-8).
Craig hosts Madison East Thursday in its final Big Eight Conference game.
