Area’s best swimmers test the rest

A place on the podium.

Earning one of the top six finishes to gain a spot on the awards stand is the goal for a number of area high school swimmers heading into Friday night’s Division 2 and Saturday afternoon’s Division 1 state meets.

McFarland has won the last five Division 2 team titles, and led by University of Wisconsin recruit Ryan O’Donnell, is heavily favored to make it six straight.

Big Eight powerhouse Madison Memorial is favored to win its 12th state title in Division 1.

Milton’s Spencer Mattox and Brandon Benson both have excellent shots at finishing in the top three in their events in Division 2. Mattox, a junior, is seeded second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.04. Grafton Al Nenning has the top time coming in at 58.70. Benson (53.26) is seeded second in the 100 butterfly behind Monona Grove’s Jack Allen, who qaulified with a time of 51.58.

Mattox and Benson are also in the fast heat of the 200 individual medley. O’Donnell, the two-time defending champion in the event, is nearly five seconds ahead of the next-fastest qualifier in the event with a time of 1:53.88. Mattox comes in with the fourth-fastest time at 2:01.00, while Benson is seeded eighth at 2:02.98.

Fort Atkinson sophomore Tyler Zaspel (22.23) and Elkhorn senior Sean Collins (22.68) are seeded second and sixth in the Division 2 50 freestyle. Fort Atkinson junior Lee Hollman is seeded second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.

Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker both qualified 200 medley relay teams in Division 1, while the Vikings’ Tommy Dvorak qualified in the 100 butterfly and Kyle Amundson in the 100 breaststroke.
