— As in the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this thief apparently decided the first pickup truck he stole was just too small.

He returned to the scene of the crime and stole a bigger pickup truck, which must have been just right.

Janesville police were called Monday morning to Marling Lumber on South River Street to investigate a report of a company vehicle missing from a locked, fenced-in lot, Sgt. Aaron Ellis said.

Before calling police, Marling officials watched surveillance video and saw a man climb the lumberyard fence to get onto their property at 3:19 a.m. Sunday. Minutes later the man drove away, through the chain-link fence, in a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, Ellis said.

But the thief appeared to have second thoughts. Video showed him returning 15 minutes later, jumping out of the S-10 pickup and climbing into a white, full-size 1995 GMC pickup truck before driving away.

The thief and vehicle are still at large, Ellis said.

Anyone with information about the thief or the truck with Marling logos and a black ladder rack is asked to call police at (608) 755-3100.
