Janesville scored first, but the Bluebirds could not control Big Eight Conference-leading Verona on Thursday on the road as the Wildcats rallied for a 9-3 victory.

The Bluebirds (5-7-1 in the Big Eight, 12-10-1 overall) opened the scoring, but Verona responded quickly to tie the game.

“There wasn’t much time to celebrate,” said Janesville coach John Mauermann. “It was short-lived.”

The Bluebirds then played even, but were whistled for a penalty. Verona converted and it seemed to deflate Janesville

“We stopped playing the last couple of minutes,” Mauermann said. “Suddenly it was a 4-1 game.”

Janesville had a shot to get back in the game when Verona was hit with a penalty.

“We go on a power play, but we made four terrible decisions with the puck,” Mauermann said. “They scored a short-handed goal, and all our work is lost.”

Verona is 12-1-1 in the conference and 22-1-1 overall.

“They are a pretty good squad,” Mauermann said. “You can’t have the breakdowns like we had.”

The Bluebirds play Madison Memorial at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Janesville Ice Arena.
