— Madison Memorial cruised to victory in Saturday’s Big Eight Conference boys swimming meet at Middleton.

The Spartans scored 646 points, easily outdistancing second-place Madison West (445.5). Middleton was third with 407.5 points. Memorial won nine of 11 events.

Janesville Craig finished fifth with 134 points, while Janesville Parker was seventh with 88 points.

“As a team, we were really pleased with our fifth-place finish,” said Craig coach Brian Kitzman. “That was one of our team goals. We had a lot of great swims today.”

The Cougars’ Jimmy Loftus turned in a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, respectively, while Nick Krueger placed ninth in the 100 backstroke.

Parker’s Kyle Amundson had the top finish on the day for Janesville swimmers. The senior was fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a PR time of 1:04.32.

“Memorial is in a different league than the rest of us,” Parker coach Eric Rhodes said. “They were the top seed in every event, and the kid that won the 100 breaststroke (Eli Gomez) is probably not even going to swim the event at the sectional meet.

“As good as our conference meet was, the sectional meet will be even tougher. There are so many strong teams and good swimmers.”

Many of the same teams are set to compete at next Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional at Middleton.
