Whitewater Warhawks stay in first-place tie

— UW-Whitewater played a strong second half to send host UW-La Crosse to a 72-62 defeat Wednesday in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball.

La Crosse battled Whitewater to a 33-33 tie in the first half. La Crosse was 14 of 30 from the field and 3 for 4 from the foul line. Whitewater was 12 for 24 and 7 of 8 from the line.

The Warhawks broke loose with a 10-0 run in the second half to take a 47-35 lead. La Crosse cut the lead to four points several times, but could not catch the Warhawks.

Whitewater retained a share of the WIAC lead with UW-Stevens Point. The No. 4 ranked Warhawks are 10-2 in the WIAC and 19-2 overall. La Crosse is 5-6 and 13-7.

Chris Davis scored 27 points, 16 in the first half, to lead Whitewater. Davis enjoyed a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the foul line, while grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. Luke Knoble added 10 points for Whitewater.

Whitewater was 24 for 27 overall from the foul line. La Crosse made 11 of 19 free throws.

The Warhawks travel to UW-Platteville for a 7 p.m. game next Wednesday.
