— Paul Ryan’s hometown welcomed him like a hero Monday as he made his first appearance here since Mitt Romney picked him as his running mate.

A campaign aide said 2,000 tickets were given out for the event, and the Craig High School gym was filled nearly to capacity, with all seats on the floor taken and most seats in the bleachers.

Ryan was visibly moved by the outpouring of affection and spoke of his roots in Janesville, as well as giving his stump speech.

A woman interrupted the speech at one point, and the crowd almost immediately began chanting “U.S.A!”

Police escorted the woman out of the building.

After his speech, Ryan and his wife, Janna, spent a lot of time shaking hands and signing autographs for well-wishers and greeting friends.
