UW-Whitewater softball drops two

— UW-Whitewater’s softball team lost a pair of one-run games Sunday and the WIAC regular-season championship to UW-Eau Claire.

The Blugolds defeated the visiting Warhawks, 2-1 and 5-4. Both teams entered the final day of the regular season 12-2 in the league.

Taylor Pierce smacked a two-run homer in the third inning for the Blugolds in the opener. Whitewater scored its only run in the fourth on Morgan Kirsch’s RBI double.

Katie Boyle (13-4) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks in six innings to take the loss.

In Game 2, the Blugolds took a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on three singles, a walk and an error which erased the Warhawks’ 3-1 lead.

Whitewater’s Paige Evangelista led all hitters with three hits in four trips. Samie Seamon and Laura Eichenold had two hits apiece for Whitewater.

Bekka Houda (10-3) allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings for the loss.

Eau Claire (30-10) earned the top seed and will host the WIAC Tournament, which begins Friday. Whitewater

(29-9) is the No. 2 seed.
