— Eric Schmitz turned in a solid pitching performance to lift visiting UW-Whitewater to a 10-2 victory and split Wednesday with UW-Platteville in WIAC baseball.

After five Warhawk pitchers were ripped for 17 hits in a 14-9 opening-game loss, Schmitz brought sanity back, pitching a four-hitter in going the distance.

Schmitz allowed Platteville two runs in the second inning on a pair of singles and RBI ground ball, but cruised the rest of the way allowing two hits through the last seven innings.

Schmitz (5-2) posted seven strikeouts and walked one.

Whitewater’s Dylan Friend, Jared Fon and Mike Mierow each homered. Fon ripped a two-run bomb in the seventh and Mierow connected on a three-run shot in the ninth.

Matt Beyer, a Parker High graduate, had a pair of hits in three trips, including a double.

In the opener, the teams combined for 29 hits—12 for Whitewater. Whitewater led 6-5 after two innings, but Platteville scored seven runs between the fourth and fifth innings to hold a 12-8 lead.

Reliever Quinton Zander (1-1) took the loss for Whitewater, allowing three runs on three hits in two innings of work. Whitewater starter Kyle Stewart was chased after two innings, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks.

Beyer connected for a solo homer to highlight Whitewater’s 12-hit attack.

Whitewater (19-12, 9-7) hosts UW-Stevens Point with noon doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium.
