The Janesville Parker track and field teams enjoyed the beautiful weather at Madison Memorial on Tuesday, but no one enjoyed it more than Trever Steinke.

The Viking senior broke a school record in the shot put that had stood since 1968.

Steinke’s winning distance of 54-11¾ broke the record of 54-11 set by Mike McDaniels 44 years ago.

He’s been pushing that window,” Parker coach Joe Dye said. “He’s worked hard.

“Mike Smrekar does a great job coaching the throws,” Dye said. “That’s a nice accomplishment, especially since it stood for so long.”

Shaun Bohler won the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.21) and the high jump (5-8) and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay team.

“The main thing is to stay healthy and improve,” Dye said.

The Parker girls got a pair of wins from junior Miranda Slaback but lost to Memorial, 83-48.

“We put Miranda in the triple crown by having her run in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 and she responded with a great night,” Parker coach Dave Lehmann said. “Two firsts and a second against a good team like Memorial is pretty impressive.

“Overall, it was a good night for us. And we finally got a chance to compete in some nice weather.”

Both Parker teams will compete in the Cougar Relays on Friday night at Monterey Stadium.
