— Sun Prairie made a statement in Big Eight Conference softball Saturday.

The Cardinals swept a doubleheader at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex against previously undefeated Janesville Craig by scores of 8-0 and 4-3.

Sun Prairie moved into sole possession of first place with an 8-0 conference mark. The

Cardinals are 10-0 overall.

The Cougars fell to 5-2 and

Junior Kristen Hoppman was the Cardinal star. She threw a complete-game shutout in the first game, and pitched the final three innings in relief in the second game.

“Hoppman kept us off-balanced,” said Craig coach Dan Bayreuther. “She had a dropball that I’m not sure we touched it once. She used it as a strikeout pitch. She was the real deal.”

Hoppman struck out 11, did not walk a batter and allowed just five hits in the first game.

Sun Prairie’s Jenna Dammen had a home run in each game.

Craig trailed 3-1 in the second game before rallying to tie it with a two-run fifth.

Freshman Sydney Cramer put up the Cougars’ first run of the afternoon with a homer in the top of the third inning.

Cramer also doubled in the two-run fifth and scored on Stephanie Perleberg’s RBI single. Leigh Grall tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

The game remained tied until the seventh when a bases-loaded error with two outs allowed the winning run to score.

“We knew Sun Prairie was going to be a good team,” Bayreuther said. “We didn’t execute at all in the first game. We played much better in the second game.”

Freshman Gaby Loveland was the starting pitcher in the second game.

“This was only the second time she pitched all year,” Bayreuther said. “We threw her into the first, and she pitched four strong innings.”

The Cougars play at Beloit on Tuesday.
