Johnson’s 65 help downs Janesville Parker, Craig golfers
Led by Mitch Johnson’s 6-under par 65, the Cardinals shot a 296 total to sweep a Big Eight Conference triangular over Janesville Parker and Janesville Craig. Parker finished with 331 to beat Craig (336) by five shots.
Johnson, a senior and University of New Mexico recruit, tamed the Pleasant View course despite windy conditions.
“He’s just a very good golfer,” Parker coach John Zimmerman said. “To go that low on a day like this is very impressive. Middleton’s got a nice team that is ranked in the state for a reason. Their top four golfers broke 80 today.
“I was fairly happy with the way we played as a team, especially Taylor Braun. He kept himself emotionally in check and went out played a nice round.”
Braun led Parker (2-2) with a 6-over 77, while Dustin Richards and Payton Graham eached shot 82.
Jordan Gagg had a 79 to lead Craig.
“We still need to work on our putting,” Craig coach Dominic Weigel. “The guys are striking the ball well and getting in good position to score, but we’re not putting well right now.
“We’ve got to do a better job of adjusting to the speed of the greens.”
Craig returns to action today at the Monona Grove Invitational at The Oaks.
