— Motorists who use Highway 12 north of Elkhorn will face several weeks of detours for scheduled road construction.

The closure starts Monday and is for two phases of roadwork by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation on Highway 12 from Highway 20 south to the Highway 12/67 split. DOT estimates the work will be finished by June 24.

Work includes repaving and improvements to signs, pavement marking and guardrails.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office on Friday issued a reminder about the work, and urged motorists to give themselves extra time traveling on Highway 12.

The work will be done in two six-week stages, with Highway 12 remaining open to local traffic. Detours for through traffic are planned.

During the first stage, which starts Monday, Highway 12 will be closed from County A to the Highway 12/67 split. The detour for that closure will route cars onto Interstate 43 to Highway 20.

During the second stage, Highway 12 will be closed from Highway 20 to County A for about six weeks. The detour for the second stage will route traffic onto County A to County H.

For truck traffic, the detour is County A to Highway 89.
