— The defense set the tone for Janesville Craig’s softball team Thursday afternoon.

Despite drubbing Madison East, 12-1, in a Big Eight Conference game, Craig coach Dan Bayreuther credited his defense for helping the Cougars improve to 7-0 overall, including 4-0 in conference.

“We threw two runners out at the plate and that seemed to get our offense going,” Bayreuther said. “East was ahead 1-0 at the time and had a chance to go up 3-0 before we threw the runners out.

“Then in the third, we put seven runs up on the board on six hits. That put us in good shape.”

Leigh Grall had two hits and three RBIs for Craig, while starting pitcher Paige Weber allowed her first run in three games.

Craig plays at Madison West on Tuesday.

Newman struck out 13 and allowed only one hit in earning the shutout win.

“We lost, but I still think there were a lot of positives to come out of this game,” Parker coach Jenni Seisser said. “Erin (Muehlenkamp), even though she gave up 10 hits, threw strikes and the defense was solid behind her.

“Other than the two runs they got in the second inning, we were right there with them. We just couldn’t get much

going against Newman. She’s pretty tough.”

Muehlenkamp, a junior, struck out four and walked only one.

Parker (0-7, 0-4) hosts Madison Memorial on Tuesday at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex.
