Whitewater pounds Platteville

— UW-Whitewater’s baseball team got out the heavy lumber Wednesday afternoon.

The Warhawks banged out 22 hits in a WIAC doubleheader sweep over UW-Platteville. Whitewater (13-6, 4-2) won the first game 8-5, and followed that up with a 12-1 win in game two.

Janesville Parker graduate Matt Beyer scored three runs for Whitewater in game one, while starting pitcher Kyle Stewart improved to 6-0 on the season with six solid innings. Stewart struck out 11 and allowed only two earned runs.

Eric Schmitz ran his record to 3-1 with the win in the second game. He allowed one earned run in five-plus innings of work, striking out four and walking none.

Marty Herum and Ryan Leavitt homered for the Warhawks in game two.

Whitewater hosts UW-Stout in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Prucha Field.
