Janesville Parker’s boys golf team opened up the 2012 Big Eight Conference season by splitting a pair of matches Wednesday afternoon at Monona Golf Club.

The Vikings, who finished with a 165 total, defeated Madison East (197) and lost to Madison West (161).

Parker senior Dustin Richards shared medalist honors with West’s Evan Brown thanks to a 1-over par 37.

“I felt pretty good about how we did for the first time out,” said first-year coach and former Parker girls coach John Zimmerman. “I’m still getting to know the kids and what their capabilities are.

“We did some good things, but we also have things to work on, especially our short game.”

Taylor Braun and Bobby Wyss shot 42 for Parker, while Peyton Graham added a 44.

Parker plays at the Edgewood Invitational on Monday at Maple Bluff.

-- Craig splits to open season—Janesville Craig’s boys golf team began the season Wednesday with a Big Eight Conference triple dual at Glen Erin Golf Club.

The Cougars defeated Sun Prairie but lost to Verona.

“We’ve got some things to work on,” Craig coach Dominic Wiegel said. “I’m a little disappointed because this was the first time Verona or Sun Prairie had a chance to play this course, so I was hoping for a sweep.

“We’re definitely capable of playing better than we did today, but we did get a split, so that’s a positive.”
