— The principal of a Beloit elementary school will be the new principal at Powers Elementary School in the Beloit Turner School District for the next school year.

The school board hired Vickie Smith to replace Sue Brandenburg, who is retiring after 16 years as Powers principal.

A committee chose Smith unanimously after two rounds of interviews from a pool of 31 candidates.

Superintendent Dennis McCarthy said Smith's supervisors in Beloit gave her "the highest of recommendations."

"She is an outstanding, caring and compassionate leader, and she has the highest level of respect from all stakeholders. As a district, we are honored to have Mrs. Smith join us," he wrote in a news release.

Smith will begin July 1 with a salary of $90,000. Brandenburg was earning $98,076.

Smith has spent her 17-year career in Beloit as a teacher, assistant principal at Aldrich Middle School, and for the past two years as principal at Hackett Elementary School.

She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in Spanish from UW-Whitewater and a master's degree in educational administration from National Louis University.
