— An honest discussion about underage drinking.

That’s the goal of two town hall meetings planned in Orfordville and Evansville to get the communities talking about the issue.

Both forums will include data from this year’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which shows 40.5 percent of Parkview High School students and 11.3 percent of Parkview Middle School students reported having at least one alcoholic drink in the last 30 days.

“The focus is what can we as a community do about it and how to engage teens (about) the risks,” said Kathy Comeau, project manager at Partners in Prevention, a host of the Orfordville event.

The Orfordville event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Villa Pizza and include free pizza, a panel of speakers and table discussions on “Parents and underage drinking—communicating with teens.”

Each year Partners in Prevention sponsors a town hall meeting in a community, and this is the first time Orfordville, Footville, Hanover and Newark communities will participate in one, Comeau said. That’s because students in the Parkview School District took the Youth Risk Behavior Survey for the first time this year, she said.

The forum is a chance to present the results to residents, who can see what students are saying about their alcohol and drug use, she said.

Building A Safer Evansville is hosting its second town hall meeting in Evansville on Monday, April 23, at Creekside Place. The event includes a free dinner and “honest conversations about the effects of underage drinking on academics, athletes and the teenage brain and body,” according to a news release.

The meeting will feature guest speaker Debbie McCormick, a three-time Olympian and world champion curler. She will discuss conditioning for peak performance in athletics and substance abuse in world-class athletics.

The meeting also will include information on the effects of drugs and alcohol on the athlete’s body and brain, data from the student survey, a kickoff for the “Parents Who Host Lose the Most Campaign” and a discussion.
