Officials: Deputy’s shot missed suspect

— A Sharon man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was not struck by a shot from a deputy after a police chase across the Illinois state line Tuesday, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Brandon J. Gibbs, 27, Sharon, died Tuesday in Clinton Township.

Deputies from Boone County had followed Gibbs into Rock County after responding to a report that he was armed and suicidal. Rock County deputies were dispatched to the incident at 7:44 a.m.

Gibbs had crossed State Line Road near Pearson Road into Clinton Township, according to the news release. Police pursued him into a wooded area.

Gibbs was wanted on a felony warrant.
