Janesville Craig softball wins ugly,’ stays unbeaten
Janesville Craig’s 8-7 victory in nine innings against visiting Middleton went right to the top of one of Cougar coach Dan Bayreuther’s career lists.
“Stephanie Perleberg probably described it best when we got into our huddle after the game,” Bayreuther said. “She said, ‘Now that was ugly.’
“In my 10 years at Craig, it may have been my ugliest win ever.”
Both teams combined for 11 errors in the Big Eight Conference opener. Craig pulled out the win in the bottom of the ninth when an overthrow on an infield grounder allowed two runs to score.
“A win is a win,” Bayreuther said.
The win puts the Cougars to 1-0 in the Big Eight and 4-0 overall.
Haley Bayreuther, Leigh Grall and Sarah Holford each went 3-for-5 to lead Craig’s 13-hit attack.
Craig’s five-run third inning gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead. Haley Bayreuther singled, stole second and scored on Kylie Clark’s single. Perleberg singled and Grall came through with an RBI single. After an error, Holford had a two-RBI single.
Middleton rallied from a 6-2 deficit. Cardinal pitcher Ashley Stormer tied the game in the seventh with a two-run homer. After Emily Pomykalski gave Middleton a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth with another homer, Craig rallied.
Nicole Kelly singled in the bottom of the ninth. Stephanie Kalish bunted and reached on an error. Kalish stole second to put runners on second and third.
After Middleton got the next two outs, Autum Sullivan hit a grounder that was thrown away, allowing the winning runs to score.
Paige Weber struck out 10 and walked just one to earn the victory. Five of the seven Cardinal runs were unearned.
“She hung in there,” Dan Bayreuther said.
Craig plays Janesville Parker on Tuesday at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex.
