The bottom of the order played a major role in Craig topping host Verona on Thursday in Big Eight Conference baseball action.

Tyler Campbell and Keaton Eichman each delivered two-run singles while batting in the eighth spot as the Cougars defeated the Wildcats, 7-3.

Craig is 2-0 in conference and 3-1 overall.

Verona took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but starter Brandon Luebke held the home team in check until the seventh.

“Luebke battled tonight,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “He never got into any big trouble. He only faced more than four batters in any inning once. He did a great job, only walking one.”

The Cougars rallied with two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to take control.

Campbell delivered the Cougars’ first two runs with his single in the fourth. Brandon Hughes got the inning going with a double, and Ryan Marro walked. Luebke laid down a sacrifice bunt to set up Campbell’s big hit.

In the four-run fifth, Riley Quinn and Hughes singled to put runners on first and second. Marro walked to load the bases.

Luebke delivered an RBI single, and Eichman came off the bench to pitch hit for Campbell with the bases loaded after a pitching change. Eichman smacked the first pitch he saw for a two-run single to right center. The final run came in when a third strike got past the catcher and there was a poor throw to first.

Quinn singled in the sixth and scored on Hughes’ double into the leftfield corner.

Verona put runners on first and second in the seventh inning with no out. Herbst brought in freshman Nick Blomgren to relieve Luebke.

Blomgren struck out his first two batters on six pitches and went to 0-2 on the third batter. The hitter flew out to right to end the game.

“Blomgren did a big job coming in to pitch his first varsity game,” Herbst said.

The Cougars play two games at Riverside Park next week. Craig hosts Sun Prairie on Tuesday and plays Beloit on Thursday.
