Once reminded, most Americans are protective of 1st freedoms

The annual State of the First Amendment national survey was released this week. The 2012 survey shows that although just 4 percent of us can name all five freedoms, and only “speech” is named by more than half of respondents, we’re pretty protective of our rights.

Extrapolating the views of retiring Democratic Rep. Gary Ackerman of New York, might we conclude that extreme partisanship is a function of … dumbness? If so, then whose fault is that? Education’s? Surely, at least in part. But the problem is broader than a single institution. Dumbness permeates every aspect of our lives, including, dangerously, our media.
