— The wife of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth of Cambridge broke her shoulder blade Monday night in a crash during practice for a charity race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Katie Kenseth, also a Cambridge native, was practicing for the Oct. 15 “Better Half Dash” when she crashed her “Bandolero” car. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where she was treated and released.

Kenseth, the 2003 Cup champion, posted on Twitter Monday night that his wife suffered “a broken scapula and some bumps and bruises.”

“That didn’t turn out so well,” he posted. “She said that was the shortest racing career in history!”

Charlotte news station WCNC posted photos on its website of Kenseth running down pit road to his wife’s aid after the accident. In one photo, he appears to be taking off her helmet as she sits inside the cockpit of the car.

Katie Kenseth is one of many wives and girlfriends scheduled to drive in the charity race that will be held before next month’s Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte.

The race is set to go 25 laps on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval in cars that resemble a full-bodied go-cart.

Monday’s practice was the first of two scheduled for this week, and several wives posted pictures on Twitter of them preparing for the practice session with their spouses. Kenseth posted a photo of Katie, wearing a replica of his purple Sprint Cup Series firesuit, standing next to her yellow car with a joke about female driver Danica Patrick.

“Getting ready for better half dash test.... looking all over but no sign of Danica’s husband,” he posted on Twitter.
