Instead of expansion, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is hoping it can keep Highway 14 from Oregon to Janesville operating smoothly without extra work.

Project manager Mike Westerveld is halfway through an access and safety study on the stretch of road.

The study is aimed at preserving the highway to put off the need for expansion or other major improvements.

Westerveld says the study findings could be used if any construction work gets scheduled for Highway 14 west of Janesville.

The DOT believes the stretch of Highway 14 west of Janesville is important for the future of regional transportation.
