Fort Atkinson High School’s football team became the first to score more than one touchdown against Monona Grove in a Badger Conference game since the 2009 season, but it wasn’t enough for the Blackhawks.


The visiting Silver Eagles used two long passes to open the scoring, then used their flexbone offense to rush for 359 yards as they defeated Fort Atkinson, 41-14, Friday night in a battle of 5-0 teams.


Monona Grove (6-0, 4-0) took a 13-0 lead on Caleb Choate touchdown passes of 89 yards to Evan Oldenburg and 75 yards to James Conner.


Fort Atkinson (5-1, 2-1) rallied to take a 14-13 lead when Tanner Boos returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown and James Nachtigal caught a 12-yard pass from Drew Dunkleberger.


Matt Besch led the Silver Eagle barrage that scored the final 28 points as Monona Grove gained the undisputed Badger South lead. Besch rushed 34 times for 192 yards and a pair of touchdown runs of 1 yard and another of 18 yards.

n Monroe 13, Milton 9—Monroe put Milton’s WIAA playoff hopes in jeopardy with a Badger South upset on the Red Hawks’ field.


Milton, which has been in the playoffs the last 10 years, fell to 1-3 in the conference and 2-4 overall. The Red Hawks, who still have unbeaten Monona Grove to play, must finish at least 3-3 in the conference to have a shot at the postseasson.


Monroe (2-4, 2-1) rallied from a 9-0 deficit and stunned the Red Hawks with Jon Becker’s 2-yard run to the winning touchdown with 44 seconds left. Alex Dahlk’s 83-yard touchdown pass to Alex Barenklau had pulled the Cheesemakers within 9-6 with 2:12 in the third quarter.


Tyler Westrick’s 27-yard field goal for Milton with five seconds left provided the only scoring of the first half. Josh Kummer’s 5-yard touchdown gave the Red Hawks their 9-0 lead with 7:51 left in the third quarter.


Kummer finished with 27 carries for 117 yards as the leasding rusher. Becker had 108 yards, also on 27 carries.

Viking quarterback Tony Volk added three touchdown passes, including a 7-yarder to Conner Kowalkowski.


Kowalkowski also returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown as Stoughton went to 2-4.


Daniel Beck led Portage with 109 yards on 23 carries.
