EVANSVILLE Not even a second-place finish in the Big Eight Conference Tournament here Thursday could spoil what has been a memorable season for Janesville Parker High School’s girls golf team.
The young Vikings came up 11 shots short in their bid to win the Big Eight dual meet and conference tournament titles in the same year. Madison Memorial won the tournament title with a 358 total at Evansville Golf Club, with Parker second at 369.
Janesville Craig, behind a fourth-place finish from Ashley Hermanns, was seventh at 404.
Verona freshman Jessica Reinecke was medalist with a 12-over 84, one shot ahead of Memorial’s Mackenzie Femrite.
Parker shared the dual meet championship with Verona, making it the Vikings’ fourth title in the last five years.
Coach Mary Ross was hoping to build on the the team’s regular-season success, but the Vikings couldn’t tame the tough Evansville course.
“We struggled a little bit today,” Ross said, “but the girls hung in there and managed as best they could. Now it’s time to get ready for regional, and hopefully, the sectional meets.
“But I’m so proud of what they’ve already accomplished this year. We’ve got two seniors and three sophomores in our lineup, and that tells me that the program is headed in the right direction. We talk a lot about ‘Parker Pride’ in our program, and that’s what I’ve seen a lot of this season.”
Lindsey Ahrens paced Parker with an 88, good for sixth place, while Taylor Utzig was 10th with a 91.
Hermanns had the low nine of the day, shooting a 2-over 38 on the back to lead the Cougars.
Reinecke’s consistency carried her to the individual title. She had nines of 44 and 40, and avoided any major blow-ups on any one hole.
“My goal coming in was to try and play my best, and if somebody beat me, then it wasn’t meant to be,” Reinecke said. “I played pretty good today. I had a couple of good holes and a couple that weren’t so good.
“We came here as a team and practiced earlier in the week, and I think that helped me today.”
