Area clinics ready to provide flu vaccinations

— At least one local medical official says he expects no flu vaccine shortages this year as area flu clinics get under way.

"I haven't heard of any problem" in vaccine supplies, said Dr. Keith Konkol, director of infectious diseases at Mercy Health System.

This year's vaccine contains three vaccine viruses including H1N1, he said.

"Essentially, it's the same as last year," he said.

Doctors saw some cases of H1N1 last year, though not as many as the previous year, Konkol said. Many people have been vaccinated, so an outbreak probably wouldn't be as bad because of the leftover immunity people have, he said.

Flu season typically runs from October to the end of April.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending everyone ages six months and older be vaccinated.

High-risk groups include people ages 65 and older, people with chronic medical problems and pregnant women.

About 36,000 people die each year due to seasonal flu, and 90 percent of those deaths are people ages 65 and older, Konkol said.
