— Police say a Janesville man reported his car stolen after driving it into the Rock River on Sunday night.

Jeffrey H. Smith, 44, of 622 E. Milwaukee St., No. 1, Janesville, was arrested at 12:30 a.m. Monday on a drunken-driving charge.

Smith was driving his Buick Rendevous east on Rockport Road and failed to turn left onto River Street near Marling Lumber, 634 S. River St., according to police reports. He drove down a boat launch and into the river. He and a passenger got out of the car and went their separate ways, according to the report.

Smith went to at tavern and drank two Jell-O shots, according to the report. He went home, changed his clothes and at 11:58 p.m. went to a different tavern to report his car stolen, according to the report.

An officer suspected Smith was lying and arrested him on what is reported as his second intoxicated driving charge.

Janesville firefighters worked more than an hour Monday morning to pull the car from the river where it came to rest about 75 yards downstream from the end of Rockport Road, according to fire department records.
