Janesville man facing attempted robbery charge

— A locked door and an observant witness lead to the arrest of a Janesville man on an attempted robbery charge.

Just before 1:38 p.m. Monday, a man wearing a mask and carrying a handgun approached the front door of Milton Avenue Beverage, 1527 Milton Ave., Janesville, according to a news release from the Janesville Police Department.

According to the release:

The clerk saw the masked man approaching and locked the door. The man tried the front door and, finding it locked, ran away.

Several people saw him flee from the building and head for his car. A witness called 911 and reported the license plate number and gave a vehicle description.

Janesville police officers were able to track the suspect to Lowell and Newman streets, Janesville.

Randy Lee Farmer, 37, of 1210 Anthony Ave., No. 3, Janesville, was arrested on a charge of attempted armed robbery. Police found a mask and a small BB pistol in his car.

Farmer is being held at the Rock County Jail.
