Chris Wedel kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime to give McFarland a 23-20 victory over visiting Evansville High in a Rock Valley North football opener Friday night.


The three-time defending champion Spartans (2-1) led 20-14 at halftime. Evansville (2-1) tied the game with a third-quarter touchdown by Ryan Cashore. A missed extra point kept the game tied.


Neither team scored in the remainder of regulation.


McFarland outgained the Blue Devils, 361-216. Nick Perkl led the Spartans with 140 yards on 20 carries. Jordan Smith added 125 on 15.


Dalton Sendelbach led the Blue Devils with 158 yards on 30 carries, including a 1-yard TD run.

The Eagles (3-0, 1-0) limited the Whippets (0-3, 0-1) to 124 total yards, while gaining 289, including 260 on the ground. Jalen McGraw added scoring runs of 1 and 16 yards.


Nate Keller, who had 65 yards on three carries, added a 29-yard scoring run.

Aasen hit Riley Pearson with scoring passes of 3 and 41 yards to open the scoring. Brandon Neal added a 74 yard punt return for a touchdown and also had returns of 47 and 17 yards.


Alan Beggs rushed six times for 83 yards, and Tim Heller added 67 yards on nine rushes.


Isaiah Peguero led the Trojans with 93 yards on 22 carries, including a 74-yard touchdown run.
