Janesville Craig tennis edges La Follette

— Janesville Craig High School used strong singles performances Thursday to defeat host Madison La Follette, 4-3, in Big Eight Conference girls tennis.

The Cougars’ Courtney Spiegler, Kaylee Rossing and Leah Voskuil each won the No. 1 through No. 3 singles matches, respectively.

Hayley Hughes and Kenzie Trappe won at No. 3 doubles to clinch Craig’s victory. The Cougars improve to 3-2 in league duals.

“Our singles pulled it out,” Craig coach Bill Peyer said.

Craig hosts Madison Memorial at 4 p.m. next Tuesday.

Doubles—Emilee Derhage-Megan Monson (MC) def. Brooke Negus-Sarah Gray, 6-3. 6-2, 7-6 (5-7). Molly Brunner-Madline Westberg (L) def. Brandie Farrell-Ashley Johnson. 6-4. 3-6, 6-4. Hayley Hughes-Kenzie Trappe def. Adama Guedelz-Sehr Kahan, 6-0, 6-3.

Junior varsity—Craig 5, La Follette 2

-- West 5, Parker 2—Parker’s Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger keep on rolling in doubles play.

Theisen and Zeilinger improved to 13-0 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory Thursday against Madison West.

“They beat one of the top teams in the Big Eight,” said Parker coach Justin Long. “It was by far their best match of the season. They are playing really, really good.”

The other highlight was Megan Mitchell’s 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles.

“I was very proud of the way she came back,” Long said. “A lot of kids get down, but she played a great second set. She played a good all-around match and deserved to win.”

Parker (1-3) faces a challenging schedule next week with a road match at Verona on Tuesday, and home matches against Middleton on Wednesday and Sun Prairie on Thursday.
