Sun Prairie High School’s football team made Waukesha West’s defending state champions pay for their mistakes in Saturday’s second round of the WIAA playoffs.

Ryan Fitzpatrick returned a fumble 29 yards for a touchdown and set up another score with a blocked punt to lead the Cardinals to a 17-14 victory over the Wolverines in a Division 1 game at Sun Prairie.

Sun Prairie (9-2) plays Verona (11-0) in a Level 3 match-up of Big Eight rivals Friday or Saturday. The Wildcats beat the Cardinals, 28-10, the first game of the season.

Waukesha West (10-1) led 7-0 at halftime, but Sun Prairie rallied behind Craig Evans’ 3-yard touchdown off of Fitzpatrick’s blocked punt. The Cardinals took the lead for good at 10-7 late in the third quarter on Lukas Otto’s 45-yard field goal.

Sun Prairie increased the lead to 17-7 with 5:06 left in the game when Fitzpatrick raced 29 yards on a fumble return, but Waukesha West got within three with 2:11 left on Brandon Berghoefer’s touchdown pass. The Wolverines got the ball back with 1:15 left but could not get past midfield.
