Milton gets behind splash park

— Planners for a splash park at Goodrich Park are enlisting help from various groups and community members to try and raise $100,000 toward the project’s overall cost.

Those enlisted in the effort include everyone from grade-school students to parent groups and ad hoc committee members. Even businesses are getting in on the act: One city restaurant is offering the “Splash Burger” as a meaty homage to the project.

The $350,000 splash park, slated to break ground next year, needs $100,000 in community-generated funding before it can move forward. That’s the general direction of a contingency the Milton City Council placed on the project in August.

City Administrator Jerry Schuetz said locals already have started banding together to organize a capital campaign to reach the goal.

The campaign includes possible corporate sponsorships and partnerships between the Milton School District, Milton’s chamber of commerce and the Goodrich Square Steering Committee—the group who brought the plan forward.

Fundraising efforts are already “well under way,” Schuetz said.

Theresa Rusch, principal at Milton East Elementary School, said in the last two weeks that she and Schuetz have met with parent groups at schools district-wide to talk about the project and to find out what kind of fundraising projects residents might be interested in.

Meanwhile, SAA Design, the engineering firm hired for the project, has hosted special events at local schools to allow students to submit their own blueprints for parts of the park’s designs.

Rusch, a member of the steering committee, said a 5K walk-run held last weekend had more than 100 people turn out. She said the school district and the city still are working with the business community to come up with a cohesive capital campaign.

Tina Thompson, owner of The Caddy Shack and Gopher’s Bar, 233 N. Janesville St., said businesses are developing a plan of their own to offer special, splash park-themed items.

Her restaurant is offering the “Splash Burger,” a hamburger topped with chipotle cheese, spicy mayo, bacon and tortilla chips, as part of its promotion. For each burger sold, $1 goes towards the splash park project.

Other businesses are also promoting the project. Thompson said customers can get promotional cards punched at each business when they buy a themed item, and special rewards will be offered.

Some proceeds from the promotion will go toward the splash park. All money raised for the fundraiser is being put into a fund established through the city.
