Warhawks net WIAC tennis title

MADISON — UW-Whitewater remains a solid No. 1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis.

The Warhawks decisively locked up a fifth straight season championship by winning all nine flight events in the conference tournament, which was completed here Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The season title is determined by a combination of dual-meet and tournament results. Whitewater rolled up 63 points to win the tournanent and finished the season with 23 points overall after going 6-0 in duals.

UW-Eau Claire finished second in season points with 17, UW-Oshkosh was third with 15, and UW-La Crosse was fourth with 13. Those three join the Warhawks in advancing to the spring conference tournament at Whitewater to determine the WIAC’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championships.

Whitewater’s Kalla Schaefer won the No 1 singles championship for the second time and received the Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete Award. Schaefer’s first title came in 2008, and she also teamed with Alexandra Bayliss to win No. 1 doubles this season, giving Schaefer her third championship in that event.

Frank Barnes of the Warhawks has been named Co-Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time he has received the award, which he shares this season with Eau Claire’s Tom Gillman.
