Janesville police report dramatic increase in specific need for Tasers
Deputy Police Chief Dan Davis says there is no doubt Tasers are saving lives in Janesville.
Davis says a significant increase in the use of Tasers can be seen over the last year, involving suspects armed with a dangerous weapon, typically a knife. He says from mid 2004 to mid 2010, a Taser was used in this type of incident only five times. He says the need increased to five times over the last year alone.
Officers appreciate having the choice of a Taser in situations like this, because it helps them avoid the need to use deadly force.
Davis can't say why Janesville has seen a recent increase in these incidents, other than to say law enforcement as a whole is dealing with a growing concern of the phenomenon known as "Death by Police Officer".
