— Elkhorn High School defeated Kenosha Tremper, 2-1, Saturday to earn the school’s first WIAA boys state soccer tournament berth.

The Elks’ John Stopple scored with an assist from Jordan Kayser at 30 minutes of the first period for the winning goal. The Elks (22-1) play 7 p.m. Thursday in a Division 1 quarterfinal.

Elkhorn second-year coach Quentin Kayser didn’t believe Stopple’s goal would hold up against the top-seeded Tremper.

“Absolutely not,” Kayser said. “They put us under a lot of fire in the second half.’’

Elks goalkeeper Eric Papenfus made 12 saves in the second half to preserve Elkhorn’s advantage.

Tremper took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the first half. The Elks’ Jordan Kayser scored at 20 minutes to even the match.
