— A midnight call to a car in the Rock River left Janesville Police and firefighters hunting for its occupant—who had already left the scene.

Sometime before midnight Sunday, a car driven by Nathan A. McGill, 31, of 1915 S. Walnut St., Janesville, was westbound on East Memorial Drive when he went off the road, down a hill, across St. Mary's Court, across Water Street, hit a utility pole and then went into the Rock River, according to police reports.

When officers and firefighters arrived the scene, the car was partially submerged on the driver's side facing into the river.

Rescue divers checked inside, around, under and down river from the car but found no one. The police department later was able to contact McGill.

The incident is still under investigation.
