— Wisconsin high school football teams won’t have a full week to prepare for the first round of the WIAA playoffs after all.

Unsettled litigation reportedly involving Milwaukee Messmer/Shorewood has pushed back the WIAA’s release of the playoff field and first-round pairings until 5 p.m. Monday. First-round games are to be played next Friday or Saturday.

The regular season ended Friday night, and the playoff field was to have been firmed up early this morning. First-round pairings were expected to be announced later this morning.

However, a member school has challenged its right to be in the playoffs. Since the judge will not rule on the case until Monday, WIAA officials chose to hold back on a release of the playoff field, rather possibly having to restructure the field after the case is finalized.

This is the first year there has been a full week between the end of the regular season and the playoffs. Coaches welcomed that full week of preparation, which now will be cut to about four days.

Previously, the regular season ended on a Thursday and the playoffs began the following Tuesday. That led to three games in 10 days for those who reached the second round of the playoffs.

In an effort to solve that dilemma, the regular season began a week early this year, thus opening a one-week window before the start of the playoffs.
