UW-Whitewater shakes off pesky Stout

— UW-Stout threw a scare into UW-Whitewater, but the two-time defending NCAA Division III champions shook off the challenge to post a 42-21 victory Friday in WIAC football.

The top-ranked Warhawks improve to 3-0 in the WIAC and 6-0 overall. Stout fell to 1-2 and 3-3.

Whitewater held a 28-7 lead at the half, but Stout scored twice on long pass plays in the third quarter to cut the Warhawks’ lead to 28-21. Stout’s Ross Carey completed TD passes of 39 and 45 yards to Trevor Morning.

The Warhawks took control in the fourth quarter, scoring on a five-play 73-yard opening drive. Levell Coppage scored on a 26-yard run with 13:15 remaining to put Whitewater ahead, 35-21.

The Warhawks defense held the Blue Devils to 16 plays and 14 yards in the fourth quarter, including a pass interception.

Whitewater quarterback Matt Blanchard completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Bernie Tamsett with 48 seconds remaining for the final outcome.

Blanchard completed 20 of 28 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns. Coppage gained 145 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns and Luke Menzel made seven catches for 153 yards.

Blanchard hit Jason Ford with a 3-yard pass for Whitewater’s first touchdown. Stout answered with a 15-play, 88-yard scoring drive that consumed 7 minutes, 3 seconds of the first quarter.

Whitewater bounced back with 53- and 73-yard scoring drives. Coppage scored on a 4-yard run and Blanchard hit Tyler Huber with a 31-yard pass to put Whitewater ahead 21-7. Coppage added a 23-yard TD run to give the Warhawks a 28-7 lead at the half.

Whitewater plays at UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
