Harms, Smits rule in rain

— Mother Nature made for a memorable Rock Valley Conference cross country meet here Thursday.

Wind, rain and falling temperatures made conditions difficult. Runners faced a muddy and sloppy course that included one very slippery hill and areas of standing water.

Whitewater High's Brett Harms didn't seem to mind.

The Whippet sophomore, despite running in a downpour half of the boys 5,000-meter race, cruised to the title in 16:54.

McFarland's Liz Smits took her second straight girls title, winning the 4,000-meter race in a personal-best 14:44.2. Smits' teammate, Jamie Shannon, was a distant second in 15:15.0.

McFarland easily won the girls team championshipe with 25 points, while Evansville was second at 102. The Spartans also won the boys team title with 49, followed by Walworth Big Foot with 102.

Harms, whose mother, Judy, is the school's girls basketball coach, said Thursday's conditions were nothing out of the ordinary.

"We train in stuff like this all the time, so I didn't change much as far as my race strategy," Harms said. "I knew it was going to be tough to get a good time because of the conditions, but I still wanted to go out and go under 17:10."

Harms and Jefferson's Clayton Morrison broke from the pack early on in the race. Morrison, who finished second, tried to stay with Harms but lost track of him the last 1,000 meters.

"The second loop through, back in the woods, when I went up the killer hill, I separated," Harms said.

"It's a little more challenging course, especially when you run on a day like this, and I think the times show it."

Smits, a senior, made quick work of the field in winning her race. She led from start to finish in cruising to a repeat honors.

Although setting a PR was important, Smits said winning was the ultimate goal.

"I wanted to come out and see how fast I could go," Smits said. "I really like this course, although it was really muddy today, and I won here last year."
