— A challenging economy has prompted a Janesville business owner to make changes to retain existing customers and hopefully pump up some new business.

Mark Groshan said the Riverfront Athletic Club, 15 W. Milwaukee St., No. 2, is now known as Janesville Athletic Club Express. The new name aligns it more closely with its sibling, the Janesville Athletic Club, 1301 Black Bridge Road, he said.

"It simplifies things for advertising and just makes sense for a lot of reasons," Groshan said.

Groshan also has simplified membership options for the two clubs.

The "Express" membership includes the downtown facility only, while the "Results" membership includes access and full use of both clubs and the wider variety of amenities available at the Janesville Athletic Club.

Both clubs have plenty of room to accommodate many more members, particularly at the downtown facility that recently expanded its hours, he said.

At $19 and $29 a month, respectively, the new dues are a dramatic price reduction, he said.

"The tough economy has lasted longer than anyone could have imagined," Groshan said. "Exercise is something that everyone needs both physically and mentally …

"I am tired of seeing members that love the clubs have to quit because they can't afford it."

Groshan said his membership rolls have been trimmed by the economic downturn. He noted that an athletic club membership is a discretionary expense.

"But I would argue it's a lot more important than some of the things we spend discretionary income on," he said. "…We want as many people as possible to enjoy all the benefits we have to offer: less stress, better sleep, weight loss and more friends, just to name a few."
