Edgewood football edges Fort
Madison Edgewood High School's football team held on to win a thriller Thursday night in the battle for second place in the Badger South.
John Eshun's interception ended Fort Atkinson's final drive, giving the Crsuaders a 31-28 victory at Breitenbach Stadium in Middleton and the No. 2 spot at 5-1 the final standings.
Fort Atkinson finished 4-2 in the conference and 7-2 overall for the regular season, giving the Blackhawks their best record since going 7-2 as the Southern Lakes runner-up in 2005.
Fort Atkinson got within the final three-point margin when Drew Dunkleberger scored on a 3-yard run and Marie Fitzgerald kicked the extra point in the fourth quarter. James Nachtigal scored on a 90-yard kickoff return, helping Fort to a 14-7 lead in the first half, which ended with Edgewood ahead 24-21.
Chris Wells led Edgewood's ground game with 15 carries for 103 yards. Fort's Tyler Courtier rushed 15 times for 103 yards.
Both teams will be in the WIAA playoffs next week, with Fort Atkinson in Division 2 and Edgewood in Division 3.
