The boys and girls Big Eight Conference cross country regular season wraps up Saturday.

The Yahara Running Course in Madison will be the site of the conference meet. Girls varsity runners will compete at 11:30, followed by the boys varsity at noon.

Madison West is the defending boys and girls champion, but Janesville Craig has an excellent shot to dethrone the Regent boys. The Cougars are ranked second in the state and feature one of the top runners in Tommy Meister. The senior has lost only once this season and is the defending Big Eight champion.

"I think both are teams are excited to compete," Craig co-head coach Brian Lawton said. "The boys get a chance to run against two teams in West and La Follette that are ranked in the top 10 in state.

"And our girls have really come together as a team. I know they're hoping for a finish in the top three."

Mesiter's toughest competition should come from La Follette's Chandler Diffee, who beat Meister in finishing second at the Midwest Invitational.

The West boys are ranked fourth in the state, and La Follette is eighth.

Sun Prairie's Liz Berkholz graduated after winning three straight conference titles, leaving West's Olivia Pratt as the pre-race favorite. Pratt and the Regents are ranked second in the state.

"West is going to be awfully tough to beat on the girls side," Lawton said. "Our goal is to run as a team and try to get into the top three.

"For our boys, we just have to keep performing the way we have been all season. It should be a fun day."
