— A slow start to a long day didn’t stop Milton High School in the WIAA Division 1 girls state golf tournament Monday at University Ridge.

The Red Hawks, ranked seventh in the state and the 2010 runner-ups, took almost seven hours to combine for a 346, which was good for fourth place after the first of two rounds. Mequon Homestead fired a 329 to lead by 10 strokes over Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels.

Milton’s Stephanie Stair carded a 77, and teammate Maddie McCue had a 79. Laura Stair shot an 83, while Courtney Terrill and Sara Dorr posted 107 and 111, respectively, for the Red Hawks.

Stephanie Stair trails Waukesha’s Emily Joers by four strokes in the individual medalist race. Stair posted three birdies, but added a pair of double bogeys and four bogeys.

Stair might have finished closer to the lead if not for an errant drive on her last hole, which led to her second double bogey.

“It was my first bad drive of the day, so I was really frustrated,” Stair said. “My drives were so good today. I must have been excited to be done.’’

Stair said her work around on the greens was a boost.

“My putting was phenomenal today,” Stair said. “I didn’t have any three putts.’’

While Stair did the heavy lifting, McCue, a freshman, continued to surprise. McCue was Milton’s medalist at the Waukesha Sectional, firing a 78 last week.

“I’ve been working on playing shot-by-shot and not of hole-by-hole,” McCue said. “I just work on my progression and playing my game.’’

Milton coach Andrea Wieland was pleased with McCue’s timely round.

“That was great,” Wieland said. “(McCue) really played well and didn’t let anything bother her—bad bounces or missed putts. She hung in there.’’

McCue’s round included a pair of birdies to go with five bogeys and a double bogey.

“I wasn’t really that ner-vous,” McCue said about her first state tournament. “We made it to state, and that’s all that I really cared about, and I just had fun today.’’

Wieland wasn’t having fun at the start of the round, however. With her team starting on the back nine, the Red Hawks went bogey, double bogey, par, double bogey, double bogey on the 10th hole.

“We got off to a kind of a shaky start,” Wieland said. “I was a little nervous, but then they came back.”

Wieland believes the Red Hawks can lift their game after a round of experience.

“We showed a little inexperience in the four and five spot, but I think after playing today, they will come out and play a lot better. We will do a little pep talking.’’
