Carol Murphy

— Wanted: Delavan Township resident for a thankless job in emotionally charged atmosphere. This person will be responsible for the fate of a generation of young people. Night meetings required and love of children a must.

The job?

School board member.

The Delavan-Darien School Board announced Monday it is looking for candidates to fill the seat vacated by three-term board member Carol Murphy.

In her resignation letter dated Sept. 27, Murphy didn’t give a specific reason for resigning.

“In this capacity, I have given what I can to our school district and community,” Murphy wrote. “If you truly know me, you know I will always care about our students and community.”

Since August, the board and school administration have been trying to address parent concerns regarding school discipline , test scores, communication issues and open enrollment losses.

Any Delavan Township resident may apply for the school board seat.

Interested applicants should submit a letter listing the qualities they would bring to the board, what they think are the major issues facing the district and how the candidate thinks the issues could be addressed.

Board members will review the letters, pick one or more applicants to interview and interview them at a board meeting.

The person picked for the vacant seat would hold it until April 2012, when he or she could seek re-election.

Letters are due by Thursday, Nov. 3, and should be sent to Delavan-Darien School District, 324 Beloit St., Delavan, WI 53115.
